An ostensible meaning of 
"profane" or "defile" is contextually justified and undisputable in some instances.

in other  instances of the word, most bible translations interpret the word as "began".

Interestingly, some of these examples occur in such foundational passages as [[Genesis 2]] and [[Genesis 6]]
