The ancient Hebrew texts appear to reference earlier legends, occasionally quoting or referring directly, or sometimes referring only vaguely to them.

There are a few instances where a character within the text actually relays a legend. [[Job 38]] is a good example, where [[Ihoh]] reminds Job of an ancient story by literally telling him the story.

In [[Judges 9]], a character named Jotham publicly recites an ancient legend about the Tree-People. 

More generally, the characters remembered from the ancient legends are referred to as the [[semim]].
