Supposedly, this would be the plural anthropomorphized form of [[repeh]]. Ostensibly, it would mean "the Deformed Ones", which could conceivable refer to a group of unusually large humanoids.

The main problem with this theory is that there are no actual instances of this word in the ancient Hebrew corpus. In every case, where translations have rendered "Raphaim" or "Raphaites" the actual Hebrew word used is [[repaim]], based on the root word [[repa]] not repeh, and referring not to [[giants]] at all, but rather, "The Healers".
