Alternate Spellings

Within the ancient Hebrew texts, there is a surprising lack of consistency of spelling. It is not uncommon to find several words which have minor spelling variations between them, but functionally and semantically appear to be the same word.

In order to achieve greater accuracy of translation, we have utilized a consistent set of spellings based on an anlytical approach which factors in a combination of frequency of use and simplicity.

Because of this, we do not always spell words like other people do. Some Hebrew words are relatively well-known beyond the linguistic community, and this is where the differences may be readily apparent. Below is a list of commonly known Hebrew words with a cross-over to our dictionary spellings. For further explanation of why our spellings are different, please refer to why do you spell things funny and transliterative alphabet

If a word is missing from this list, try using the Search at the top of the page.
