aor
אור
'aor' at first appears to means “light”. The word first appears in Genesis 1, with the “sons of light” (ben aor) being a primary theme in verses 1-4 and recurring in verse 18.
However, most occurences are ostensibly translated as “fire”. This is somewhat suspect in that 'aor' usually occurs with 'ash', which is also translated as “fire”. Why would the texts use two different words together if they both mean the same thing? This suggests that perhaps 'aor' is related to but distinct from fire. Like maybe “light”.
It appears to be cognate with “aura” and “gold” (Latin AU) as in shiny.
This is the root word of urim
Strangely, this word is sometimes mistranslated as “herbs” - discuss
