mezerim

מזרימ

'mezerim' is not well-defined. It appears only once in the ancient Hebrew texts, and it is not clear whether the word is actually based on the root word mezer or mezel, both of which have their own definition issues.

Top three possible meanings might be:

  • “the Fork People”
  • “the Star People”
  • “the People of the East”

Contextually, the single instance of 'mezerim' does not provide much additional information:

Job 37:9 is typically translated “From the chamber [of the south] comes the whirlwind and from the scattering winds [of the north] cold”.

However, the cardinal directions of north and south do not appear in the original text, and a more accurate rendering is: “what within arrived storm 'mezerim' cold”.

The traditional interpretation of “of the north” is completely unjustified both etymologically and contextually. There is absolutely no reason to associate 'mezerim' with the north, and the word structure here is completely overlooked, ignoring both the im suffix and the semantic value of any possible root words.
