Tselem is typically translated as image, but it is literally the shadow, based on the root word, tsel.

This word appears in the phrase “in the image of god”, in Genesis chapter 1.

Also chapter 5, 9, and Numbers 33, Ezekiel 7, Amos 5

However, therea re a number of completely different Hebrew words which seem to mean “image”.

Exodus 20 uses a different word;

1823 demut דמות form

6459 p̄e·sel פֶ֣֙סֶל֙ ׀‪‬ a carved image

8544 tə·mū·nāh, תְּמוּנָ֡֔ה likeness

Oddly, Mauro Biglino gives a definition of “cut out”, for 'tselem'.¹⁾
