beyel
beyel
בעל
More commonly known as “Baal”, 'beyel' is a character, or possibly a group of characters within the ancient Hebrew narratives, that is generally understood to be the “god” of the Canaanites.
Beyel figures prominently in ancient Canaanite mythology, and is well attested in the so-called “Ugaritic Texts”, a collection of Canaanite writings dating from around 1200 BC, essentially contemporary with the Hebrew invasion of Canaan under Joshua.
Etymologically, the word is build on the root word yel and etymological discussion probably fits better on that page, due the the numerous closely related words.
