peteh
peteh
פתה
The meaning of 'peteh' is not clear in a general way.
It is often translated as “opened” , or “revealed” or “door”, but perhaps the closest translation would be “let loose”. It typically applies to an instance of a container being opened to reveal its contents. In some cases this is true metaphorically, as in Job letting loose his mouth to reveal his opinions.
Oddly however, in Exodus chapter 28 and 39, the word is usually translated as “engraved”. This dubious interpretation occurs only in conjunction with the apod (“Ephod”).
