yolem
עולמ
Although it is often translated as “eternity”, Mauro Biglino, former chief translator for the Vatican, has pointed out that the word generally carries with it a spatial rather than temporal reference.
He suggests a meaning that a more correct translation for 'yolem' (or as he pronounces it 'olam') is “an unknown place” or perhaps “beyond”.1)
Mauro further states that the personal plural form yolemim should be understood as “the universe” or all those dwelling within the universe. Strictly speaking though, a literal interpretation would be “the Beyond Ones” or “the People of the Beyond”.
