'hedes' means “moon”, and metaphorically, the time for one lunar cycle, a “month”. This aspect of the word is the most likely root of hedesim. The chronological aspect is sometimes extended to mean “new”.
It is not clear whether the Greek term “Hades” is derived from 'hedes'.
